Next generation 3D glasses from Dolby; are 3D theatres ready to upgrade?
Dolby’s new 3D glasses are a far cry from the cheap setups you usually get in theatres. Look for them to find their way into your theatre soon
The last time I saw a 3D movie, it was Resident Evil. I’m not here to get into how the movie was, but the glasses themselves felt like I could’ve bought better glasses at a gas station. In fact, I’m sure of it. Now, I get it...you’re “giving” them to the general public (of course we always pay for them somewhere), not to mention that they come in a plastic bag. However, Dolby has created 3D glasses fit for the technology.
Utilizing 3M’s multilayer optical film lenses, the glasses actually fit your face. They are anti-glare, anti-scratch, and most importantly anti-goofball. These things look great, and are designed to replace all old 3D glasses in movie theatres everywhere.
Theatres need to be able to track glasses such as these, which is why Dolby has included individual serial tags that allow for tracking and stock coordination. Further, priced at $12 a set, it can’t be that much more than what they’re paying for the cheap standard-issue now.
My guess is that they’ll likely continue to carry the old style and sell the upgraded style in the theatre for the user to retain and take home for future use. Perhaps they’ll allow you to check them out and return after the movie (likely getting your ID or credit card back). But, regardless of what they intend, one thing is for certain: they’ll find a way to charge far too much for it!
There is another option, that could be unlikely, but there is logic involved. Dolby pays any offsetting costs created by the upgraded viewing glasses. Why? Well, the answer is simple: fuelling the market. If the 3D market tanks due to a lack of technology or consumer interest, Dolby will take a huge loss in their market share of 3D projectors. In that light, it makes sense. In other words, it’s all about self-preservation.

Avatar will be re-released in this autumn with eight minutes extra footage.
Avatar was one of the best impressive movies. TechRadar has seen the movie on the big screen, but we think that 160 minutes was undoubtedly the longest time, we have seen the 3D movie in one sitting.
Adding eight extra minutes implies that the movie will be 170 minutes long now. This will test the patience of people, as they have to wear the 3D specs for long hours.
According to Fox, the main reason for releasing Avatar again is 3D explosion. The number of 3D screens has now increased and the enthusiastic movie goers who did not experience the movie in 3D will now get an opportunity.

3D Ticket Premiums are making audiences tired
The latest 3D movie, Shrek Forever After is a 4th of the Dream Works Animation series. Studio expected its opening at around $120 million, but the actual opening was very disappointing. In the opening weekend, it opened just for $71 million. Many critics have already labeled it as a flop movie. Audience has given good response to its 3D version.
Three years ago, the 3rd movie in the series ‘Shrek the Third’ earned $122 million domestically. Compare to that this results are not up to the mark. In the domestic market the opening week has only given $71 million.
Hollywood is worried about the low opening of this latest 3D movie. Many people feel that the low opening is because of the high ticket prices. BTIG researcher, Richard Greenfield said that it is the way of telling by the US consumer to the exhibitor that the prices of the 3D movie are very high. They can easily pay the high money for the better movie like Avatar or Alice in wonderland, they will not be paying so high amount for the average movie like Shrek. They will prefer 2D over 3D for such movies.
It is going to be disturbing for Hollywood executives as many big studios are in line for creating 3D movies in the future. At Dream Works Animation, Jeffrey Katzenberg declared that he is planning to produce all the future movies in stereoscopic 3D. Due to the result of the Shrek-3D and audience’s response everybody at Hollywood studios is worried.
The opening weekend collection is usually tells the story of the box office performance for the Hollywood movie. First weekend is crucial for the box office. Though it has low opening in the U.S., in the international market Shrek is very much successful. In Russia it has opened to $20 million and even passed records of Avatar.
If we bifurcate the profit by 3D and 2D prints then 3D has played major role in the success of Shrek Forever. 3D screens have got 60% more revenues. 3D premium has got $13 million. Some expert say’s that maybe audience has been bored by the Shrek series as this is the fourth in the series. There are many claims in the market and we need to wait for few more days as it is too early to talk about it as this is a recently released movie.
