The 3D-effect has captured the attention of plenty of people, however, numbers getting posted at the moment show that 3D Blu-rays aren’t near the top of everyone’s wish lists. Instead, it appears that the trend isn’t coinciding with the projected adoption of 3D technology over the next few years. That’s strange, and while the 3.5 million units may make you stop and say, “Hey, that isn’t so bad!”, try this on for size: half of them were included with hardware! Ouch.
IHS Screen Digest made the estimation regarding 3D Blu-ray sales. The key word in that last sentence is estimate. This shouldn’t be taken as too much of a prophetic sales number, though, as there simply aren’t too many titles available on the 3D Blu-ray platform. It’s also important to remember that 3D adoption is expected to steadily increase over the coming months and obviously there’s no need to pick up a 3D disc unless you have 3D hardware.
These numbers are going to get blown way out of proportion…of this I’m certain. In the end, a sluggish economy is more to blame for the 3D-slow, not any issue with the technology. So, stay tuned, and we’ll let you know how things finish up at the end of the year. Until then…hey, companies…how about lowering a price or two along the way, huh?
