A product review for Sony’s new BDP-S580 Blu-ray player. With incredible features and a reasonable price tag, this should become a mainstay in the entertainment sector
When it comes to home entertainment, Sony has been a part of our lives for years. At times, their designs can get a little complicated, but this time around, they really hit the nail on the head. The interface is very user-friendly and the XMB (Xross Media Bar) facilitates just about all of the features.
Offering great Blu-ray performance, the BDP-S580 handled just about everything we threw at it. Granted, we weren’t huge fans of the akward remote control, but when we’re talking about a unit that costs $199.99, it’s something we can live with.
However, some newer BD-Live discs will bog the component down a bit, but again, this is one of the few issues we had. On-board Wi-Fi capabilities combined with 3D support make this unit one of Sony’s best releases to date for the price tag.
A USB port and LED display screen are on the face of the unit, and the standard Eject, Play, and Stop buttons are obviously front and center. The Ethernet and USB outputs allow it to be easily integrated into your home theatre system, offering the ability to stream content as other, more expensive devices.
Final take? This is a great component for a great price. Those that are just now getting into the process of upgrading their entertainment units should find this unit very enticing, and expect Sony continue to push forward with future generations of this device.
