Remember when you made the frugal decision to leave the 3D monitor out of your budget for the time being, as there weren’t a whole lot of reasons to get involved at that level yet?  Well, that one may come back to bite you, as Google seems to be on the verge of releasing a 3D search engine.  The company is always given credit for having foresight and obviously incredible technology, and it seems that they are buying the 3D movement in general.

Because Chrome will let you interact with several web pages at once, the logical next step is to include the 3D interface that allows you to show all of the pages on a single screen.  This will help many of us that are digital journalists or marketers, putting some solid technology at our fingertips.  The “OffscreenTabs” feature that Chrome already exhibits does not have 3D capabilities yet, but something is brewing here and we figured that we’d keep you informed.

Do we trust Google as our internet vessel?  Of course we do, as they have always made solid advancements.  This time around, it seems that they are rolling the dice that 3D technology will take a serious hold on visual technology moving forward.  We tend to agree with them…after all, great minds think alike, don’t they?

But, before you get all excited about making the next 300, it’s time to discuss price.  As of now, you’ll be shelling out $7,899 to get your hands on this puppy.  We know, that was probably more than your last film’s entire budget, but when you have the ability to tune up your shoots to professional 3D levels, the sky can definitely be the limit.
This is likely the first step toward creating tools that smaller directors can use to make movies on par with higher-level studios.  The investment could be worth it if you have the skills to match the technology.  Look for more releases in the near future, and start making movies that you only dreamed were possible.  Now, if they can just make something that will help me write better scripts…

When you consider the speed at which 3D technology is expanding, it’s actually quite surprising that more gamers haven’t adopted the platform.  You know how this stuff goes, though…we usually need a bit of nudging because who likes change that costs some extra cash when it’s tight for many?  But, when you start seeing things that make you salivate, it’s usually time to dive in.  Meet the Viewsonic V3D245 LED monitor.  Featuring NVIDIA’s prowess, this guy should make everything pop.

It’s got an HDMI 1.4 input, so watching Blu-rays or running content from your hard drive won’t be a problem at all.  A 20,000,000:1 contrast ratio is impressive enough, but when you factor in the SRS Premium Sound speakers that are attached to the monitor, you’re off to the races. 

Basically, you’re getting an incredible 2D monitor that has some impressive 3D capabilities.  The overall price will run you just over $700, and Nvidia 3D Vision 3D glasses are included in the price, so at least you know you’re getting the monitor, some specs, and speakers in a single box.  This is a great release from ViewSonic and you can find it hitting stores in September.

So, not that we aren’t satisfied with the specs, but it isn’t the techie stuff that’s got us so pumped about ViewSonic’s new 3D monitor.  The 24-inch model, which ships in August, is going to boast some good size for its $499 price tag.  Not bad, huh?  We didn’t think so either, but that doesn’t mean that the specs don’t stand on their own. 

We’ve already mentioned the 24-inch display, but a 1080p LED-backlit panel coupled with NVIDIA’s 3D Vision setup (glasses included) really gives it some guts.  Another feature, which is a bit more on the paperwork side of things, is the three year warranty that they’re offering as well.  That’s going to ensure that you don’t buy it, break it, and then suddenly want to toss it into the streets below…

NVIDIA has a host site, Vision Live, which is providing 3D content for users, and with releases like this, expect them to build on the nearly 600 titles that are featured there.  So, if you’re looking upgrade your monitor, give this guy a look.  We’ll have more details when we get our hands on a unit, so expect a review here very soon.

LG generally makes some quality products, so we expect the DM50D 3D monitor to be quite the pick-up.  Regardless of whether or not you’ve made up your mind about active or passive 3D technology, let this guy try to sway you.  LG released some information about the unit, though we’ll need to wait on giving you the specs.  Not because we don’t trust you, but because we don’t have ‘em.  Let me tell you what we do have…

LG’s Cinema 3D TV line is one of the best on the market, and they’ve been adding many of the features that have led to that success to their 3D monitor concepts.  The DM50D utilizes the passive 3D style, and by using the “Flicker Free” setup that we’ve seen from LG in the past, you’ll be getting a great 3D experience with incredible brightness for a 3D unit.  Still not convinced?  Try this…

The display has an onboard DTV tuner, plenty of HDMI connectivity to help you integrate all of your 3D gear, and a USB port which will allow you to stream content without hassle.  That’s a pretty sweet setup when you consider the competition in the 3D monitor game…there isn’t much.  July marks the European release and the global market will get their chance shortly thereafter.  Ready to take your desktop to the next level?  Check the specs on the LG DM50D once they’re released, and give this one some serious consideration.  Hopefully it won’t break the bank.

E3 was full of surprises, but one unit showcased had people buzzing long after we had returned to the hotel.  Sony unveiled a 24-inch PlayStation 3D “Dual View” gaming monitor that at first had us scratching our heads, but later had us pretty pumped up.  This unit can do some amazing things besides just delivering a 240Hz refresh rate to an LCD panel.  When you’re scoping a game in 3D, you’ll be getting 60 frames per second to each eye, but this is where things get a little weird…

Of course, we know by now that you get signals to your left and right eye when wearing 3D specs, but Sony took things a step further.  A button on the glasses will allow you to get a private gaming session in while the other player is playing on the same screen.  You read that right.  The way it works is they send two left eye signals to one player and two right eye signals to the other.  Basically, you’re gaming against each other without seeing the other’s screen.

This is all what Sony is claiming anyway, so we’ll let you know how things pan out when we get our mitts on one of these bad-boys.  Also added to the mix is better technology to reduce ghosting.  With a unit like this, you know Sony has some titles already in mind that will make the most of their new creation.  To further increase excitement, Sony’s apparently working on holographic and head-mount display technology, so we’ll keep you posted.  Looks like Sony’s gearing up for a huge year!

Gaming monitors are making an appearance every week, it seems, no?  Well, Acer is offering up their 3D desktop monitor, so we figured it best to take it for a test drive and report back to you.  The GD235HZ held up well when we put it to the gaming test, and with plenty of connectivity (DVI, VGA, and HDMI), we couldn’t find many flaws in that department.  The 3D looked great, but you’re going to need to do some adjusting.  At first, we thought it was something we had done, but we noticed that the monitor delivered very rich greens…too rich, as it was overpowering the picture.  Some adjusting should help to ease that.

Other than the issues with the over-saturated greens, we liked just about everything the GD235HZ had to offer.  When it comes to monitors, you’ll want something that can deliver a great picture, obviously, but also something that won’t need to be upgraded quickly.  This particular unit will handle your 2D and 3D content with no problem, but if you aren’t ready to dive into 3D-mania, you may find it a bit expensive.

We liked the 23-inch screen, but we definitely wished it was a bit more stable.  When we bumped the desk, it wobbled quite a bit from side to side.  Further, with the exception of the 10-degree tilt, there wasn’t much else that would help in regards to ergonomics. 

Our Verdict:  A great monitor with some quality connectivity.  However, if you aren’t purchasing it specifically for 3D, you can probably find a cheaper model better suited for your needs.

So, we’ve moved on from 3D televisions to 3D computer monitors, and while there are a few companies that are offering up some decent options, we decided it’d be prudent to take a gander at the Hanns G HS233.  After all, doesn’t 2D suddenly seem lifeless and boring?  Whether you have 3D movies (or games) or not, there’s no doubt that the content will continue to come, and those without a 3D monitor will be left wondering what happened to their seemingly incredible computer visuals…

The HS233 is a great unit for the money.  The monitor can handle just about any 3D you toss at it, but there’s a downside to the low price you’ll likely see attached:  it doesn’t include the 3D package that Asus’ comparable model does.  That explains the lowered cost, so if you decide on picking this monitor up, you’ll need to supplement it with a 3D package.  That’s a bummer, isn’t it?

When you aren’t viewing 3D content, the picture is incredible.  Those that are looking for a quality monitor that they can later upgrade to 3D may find this unit to be their monitor soul-mate.  But, bear in mind that it’s a little wobbly at times, and adjusting it may be cumbersome (on the stand).  In the end, if you want to get a monitor for 3D, this can do the trick, but don’t be fooled into thinking that the lowered price will give you everything the Asus model will.  Instead, you’ll need to shell out a bit more, but in terms of performance, the HS233 is a great monitor that should give you plenty of room to grow into 3D.

When ASUS released their last line of monitors, many were impressed.  It only makes sense that when they displayed the new Designomodels, they kept true to the design.  With 22-, 23-, and 24-inch displays available, the color accuracy and 178-degree viewing angle prove to be quite impressive when put to the test.

There were some things we’d have liked to see with the 3D versions, but ASUS didn’t agree apparently.  Sure, they added an integrated IR transmitter for NVIDIA 3D Vision, but for the most part, the new models don’t seem to be much different from their previous 3D monitor models.  The integrated transmitter is something many had been calling for, however, so we’ll see if that’s enough to move the new line off the shelves.

Prices have yet to be released, but the previous lines were fairly reasonable, so unless they absolutely blindside us, you can expect the prices for the new line to be close.  With 1920 x 1080 resolution, the new ASUS Designo line should generate some interest from price conscious consumers.

So, you wanted to find the ultimate gaming monitor, huh?  Acer thinks they have a unit that you need to see.  The HN274H 3D monitor is breaking ground as the first 3D Vision 27-inch model that features HDMI 1.4a support for 3D.  This will offer up an incredible range of compatibility.  Your gaming console will work perfectly when you’re playing in stereo 3D mode, and there’s a great chance that if you conceive it, this unit is compatible.

When you’re using Acer’s new monitor, there is something that it can offer your gaming experience that a 3D HDTV cannot:  1080p at 120Hz across the Dual-Link DVI.  You will need glasses, however, though they are included.  The active shutter shades are standard, and the entire package has already begun appearing globally.

The HN274H is selling for $699 in some markets, though at the moment supply is relatively limited.  Because so many gamers have been waiting on this unit due to the 27-inch screen, they’ve been getting snapped up very quickly.  What do you think?  Honestly, in our opinion, $700 is a small price to pay for such a large 3D screen that will make your entire gaming experience better...
