A Hacked Kinect Offers Up 3D Video Conferencing

There’s nothing like see what the technologically gifted can do with our toys, right?  The video shows that a hacked Kinect can offer up 3D video conferencing, likely opening the door to the same concept within weeks.  A group at the University of North Carolina took several Kinects and created the ability to get glasses-free 3D video conferencing.

This could also pose a problem for some…if you’re wearing a head tracking device and everyone can see what you’re seeing, what on earth happens when you get caught looking somewhere you shouldn’t?  Oh boy, this can lead to some ugly places in the business world.

However, for the time being, it’s a good time, and it’s pretty impressive what this group put together.  3D conferencing is already emerging with the popularity of 3D webcams and of course the 3D monitors.  Give the video a look and see what you think.  Did they stumble onto something here or are we simply looking at a novelty that only good for fun?  When you’re bored in the next business conference, you’d better be on your toes.  There’s a chance that your boss is watching your every move…in 3D…and that could be very, very bad.
