Sony: The Future of 3D is Bright!

Make no mistake about it, I love optimism, and while there have been several detractors regarding the Nintendo 3DS, I have always wondered why many aren’t realizing what we are actually witnessing:  the first generation 3D gaming device that will undoubtedly lead to massive changes in the industry.  Sony sees what we’re talking about, and Mick Hocking of Sony London Studios obviously has 3D on his mind.  In mentioning the current 3D landscape, he mentions that the future of 3D as a “creative medium” will continue to push what we believe, as gamers, is possible.

I couldn’t agree more, as I’ve told everyone that the 3DS has offered so much beyond the gaming experience of the console itself.  That being said, I love my 3DS and haven’t had any issue with the release.  Sony apparently plans on integrated 3D technology with the Playstation Move, so things like Resistance 3should begin to show us what is in store for 3D gaming.

Properly understanding where we are in 3D technology can help consumers accurately project where things will be in a few years.  Sure, we’re starting to see plenty of glasses-free 3D units, but it will take time to perfect.  After all, flat screens underwent a similar trial by fire.

Everyone at IFA was buzzing about 3D rumors, and Sony wasn’t going to let themselves get left out of the action.  They announced that the Sony VAIO S notebook was getting a 3D overlay screen that will allow users to enjoy a glasses-free 3D experience, creating an interesting new “gadget” for those that are interested in experimenting with 3D technology.  The screen is 3mm thick and will clip onto the 15.5-inch display, delivering great looking 3D for videos or pics without the use of specs.  Now we’re talking…

We expect Sony to expand the technology to other devices, but for now, it seems that they want to experiment with the VAIO S series.  Wondering about the viewing angles and how the 3D will look if you move?  The webcam will have an app that tracks your head, giving a great 3D visual regardless of how you’re situated in front of your laptop.  There are limitations, however, as you’ll want to be between 30CM and 1 meter of the screen.

This is great stuff as we expect to see a greater adoption rate of 3D technology.  Nothing can initiate the trend like creating gadgets like this one that simply upgrade your existing equipment, allowing for a cheaper delve into the 3D craze.  Interested in turning that 2D VAIO into a 3D machine?  Check out Sony’s latest concoction and see what the fuss is all about.

They did not launch their tablet here as they want to launch it by the end of the year.  At CES -2011 many other major manufacturers like Samsung, Motorola, Dell, Acer, and Lenovo have launched their tablets.

According to the head of Sony’s consumer division Mr.Kunimasa Suzuki many companies have announced their tablets but very few have actually hit the market.  He says that apples iPad it the leader in the tablets and Sony would like to take the second place in the tablet market.  Sony’s film and television production company has already working on it.

Sony people wanted to know whether Galaxy Tab which is launched by Samsung in the last year’s CES has worked or not.

Press reporters wanted to know whether Sony’s new tablet will have 3D screen or not for which Suzuki admitted that it can have 3D screen.  He did not comment anything about their play station phone.

According to Stringer the sale of the 3D TVs was not as per the expectation because there was never enough content for 3D TVs but now this point is not important as many companies are producing 3D content.  Once 3D content is available, more people will buy 3D TVs as the experience of watching anything in 3D is rich and satisfactory.

CES wasn’t all about 3D. Sony, even though they had a lot of focus on 3D stuff, like that awesome prototype for a 3D headset, they still had other stuff to show off, like the line of Cyber Shots that were set for release in 2011. Among them was the DSC-TX100V, which is the first among the entire CyberShot line of cameras to sport an OLED screen. This was definitely a great design choice, because is was just beautiful in terms of brightness, clarity and color reproduction. Sony didn’t look away in the design department either. It has a very rugged look, but at the same time, it’s extremely classy. It has a very rubbery look and feel to it, but doesn’t have any of those bulky rubber accents, which makes it seem sleek and rugged at the same time, which is not something you see everyday on gadgets. Sitting in the booth was also the DSC-WX10, which is the only digital camera to support shooting video at full HD 1080p resolution at 60 fps. There were a few more interesting cameras that we’ll see released through the year. Look out for these guys from Sony for all your digital camera needs.

OLED 3D Headset craziness from Sony

We’ve seen so many different ways to get 3D content delivered to us at these years CES. We’ve seen a whole army of 3DTVs and monitors work their ways into the show and into our hearts. But this next one is sure to blow you away. Before we get into it, know that this is just a prototype, and probably will never make it to production stages. The product in question here is the Sony OLED 3D headset. It basically packs two OLED displays, each packing a resolution of 1280 x 720, and they look awesome.

It looks like something dropped off a space ship, and it works like a charm too. It has its downsides, that can’t really be helped. Things like it’s weight are inevitable, but that’s compensated by the 3D effect it delivers, which is among the best we’ve ever seen. It gave the viewers an awesome sense of depth, and images themselves looked really crisp and sharp. If it’s going to be a one viewer thing, then the headset is an obvious choice to the huge TVs that aren’t perfect yet. Again, this isn’t a production ready model, and there was no word if it will ever be, but we can only hope that Sony does the cool thing here and brings these bad boys to the consumers.
