If you are anything like me, you love the 3D experience when gaming but cannot stand the fact that the colors simply dull-down when you put the specs on.  Well, after hearing the gripes from gamers for months, NVIDIA is answering the bell with their latest active-shutter 3D glasses release – the 3D Vision 2.  The premise here involves eliminating that dulling color effect that we’ve endured in the past, and instead, giving us something that more closely resembles the titles that we know and love.

They created a much larger lens, about 20% larger to be exact, and they have restructured the lens frames, giving you a more comfortable experience when wearing headphones.  These are said to be easier on your eyes as well, so hopefully any eyestrain that you experienced in the past will stay in the past.

When coupled with the latest NVIDIA displays, the word is that this is going to change the way we see 3D gaming.  I haven’t gotten my mitts on a pair, yet, but when I do, we’ll revisit this conversation and I’ll get you guys some more digs on the new equipment.  The glasses sell for $99 a pair, or $149 for the kit.  Enjoy your 3D gaming, everybody.  Now, if we can just talk them into working on virtual reality a little bit more…

Just when you thought things couldn’t get any better regarding your memories from Uncle Jim having too many egg-nogs and falling into the Christmas tree last year, DXG comes out and releases something that will escalate the experience!  The 2D/3D 5F9V is a 3D camcorder that delivers stunning video quality in 1080p HD.  You can create glasses-free 3D stills or videos with this baby, and because the 3.2-inch LCD screen allows you to check out your captures, you are assured of getting the most from the unit.

If you want to check out the company softball game, simply plug it into your television with the HDMI cable that is included with the unit.  Priced at $299, it’s apparent that 3D technology is starting to re-enter the atmosphere in terms of price.  In fact, the only drawback to the DXG-59FV is the lack of storage space.  The model ships with 128MB of capture storage, which means that most users will want to snag the 32GB card to increase the overall capacity.

Interested in taking your family outing to the next level?  Pick up DXG’s latest release through their company website today.  There are few things that can allow you to capture Hollywood-worthy memories, and this unit is definitely one of them.

ESPN 3D to Broadcast Monday Night Football in 3D

You knew it was coming…the writing was on the wall as ESPN began touting their 3D channel, ESPN 3D.  Of course, once they landed the contract to begin broadcasting Monday Night Football, the next step seemed quite logical – begin broadcasting it in 3D.  And…that’s the news we have for you here.  At the 3D Summit, an ESPN VP showed some video of sports fans watching 3D sports in local pubs.  One fan was very enthusiastic:  “My next TV purchase will be a 3D TV!”  Seeing this kind of reaction obviously got ESPN all warm and fuzzy inside, as they look to increase their already dominant market share of the sports reporting world.

It will take a little while to take hold, as the 3D broadcasts of Monday Night Football won’t begin until 2014, but that can be seen as a positive.  Many are still using 2D televisions, and giving things another couple of years to progress should help the adoption rate.  Further, it will help the technology advance, ensuring that when they do begin these broadcasts, the visuals will be cutting edge.

We’ve already seen interest in 3D sports in the UK, so this news, while important, probably doesn’t shock anyone.  I, for one, am a huge NFL fan, and think that watching the events in 3D will be killer.  The only question now is whether or not the rest of the NFL fan base will feel the same.  After seeing the reactions presented by ESPN at the 3D Summit, I think this one is a slam dunk…er…touchdown.

The Lion King 3D Shows Consumer Interest in 3D!

Remember when we were reading polls some months back that touted 3D films weren’t making waves in the film industry according to cinema patrons?  Well, it seems that content will be the deciding factor here, as The Lion King 3D is setting marks everywhere.  On opening weekend, the popular Disney classic took its 3D makeover all the way to the top spot, lending credence to the notion that 3D film is going to be tough to beat when the film itself is a quality work.

There are some factors here worth considering, though, besides just the 3D technology.  Remember that The Lion King first hit theatres nearly 17 years ago, and with many of those enamored children now having families of their own, it makes sense that many would take their children to see the Disney classic.  Here’s something to note, however – the film was released in 2D and 3D formats, and 92% of the patrons seeing the film saw it in 3D!  Notice a trend here?

This should perk up the ears of Hollywood directors that have already been preaching the benefits of 3D technology.  When the film is good, the technology adds an extra element that cannot be matched.  The key phrase here:  WHEN THE FILM IS GOOD.  When directors handle filmmaking with the idea that the product must be solid, the 3D element can really bolster interest and sales.  Just ask James Cameron…

Rumor Mill: Google Releasing 3D Browser Soon

Remember when you made the frugal decision to leave the 3D monitor out of your budget for the time being, as there weren’t a whole lot of reasons to get involved at that level yet?  Well, that one may come back to bite you, as Google seems to be on the verge of releasing a 3D search engine.  The company is always given credit for having foresight and obviously incredible technology, and it seems that they are buying the 3D movement in general.

Because Chrome will let you interact with several web pages at once, the logical next step is to include the 3D interface that allows you to show all of the pages on a single screen.  This will help many of us that are digital journalists or marketers, putting some solid technology at our fingertips.  The “OffscreenTabs” feature that Chrome already exhibits does not have 3D capabilities yet, but something is brewing here and we figured that we’d keep you informed.

Do we trust Google as our internet vessel?  Of course we do, as they have always made solid advancements.  This time around, it seems that they are rolling the dice that 3D technology will take a serious hold on visual technology moving forward.  We tend to agree with them…after all, great minds think alike, don’t they?

Who doesn’t love Disney?  There are more reasons for 3D lovers to embrace the cartoon juggernaut, as the Disney D23 Expo brought great news to 3D advocates.  Over 500 people visited the expo and were polled regarding their thoughts on 2D versus 3D technology.  A staggering 71% stated that they believed that 3D content was “dramatically better” than 2D content, signaling a change in the overall mentality regarding the popular platform.

To heighten the excitement, 27% of those polled claimed that the 3D visuals were “fabulous”, and half of those present mentioned that they wished they had the technology in their home.  This is important, as we are beginning to see prices come down and adoption rates increase.  Remember, “if you build it they will come”, and the presence of more 3D content will undoubtedly increase the opt-in rate.

The survey was conducted by an organization doing so on behalf of Panasonic, so take that for what it is.  But, fudging numbers is unlikely, as the questions seemed to be very direct.  What’s your take on 3D technology?  3D TV numbers are rising, and with so many units maintaining the technology regardless of whether or not it’s the driving force behind the purchase, there will be quite a bit of experimentation in the coming months.  Weigh in below and let us know your thoughts regarding 3D home entertainment and whether or not you’ve already gotten in on the action.

There are a few personalities in the entertainment industry that generate buzz and garner respect when they speak on industry-wide issues.  In this case, James Cameron is playing the role of 3D advocate, as he always does, and mentions how he’s working with the BBC to create the big screen release of Walking with Dinosaurs.  Though this should be absolutely stunning, Cameron does let you know how he feels about the BBC holding back with 3D a bit:

“The BBC has held back a little bit with 3D…BSkyB has jumped in and ESPN has jumped in.”

It’s obvious that Cameron has faith that the BBC can dominate the region’s 3D broadcasting, but the hesitation has already cost them some valuable ground.  The costs associated with development have been steadily dropping, and because of that, the BBC should make a move – it’s obvious that everyone else is!

Cameron goes on in the interview to explain how he believes that it’s time for the BBC to make the muscle move into the industry.  3D is obviously here to stay, and as the development costs continue to plummet, it will only lead to more competition, as smaller organizations can start to get into the 3D movement.

Cameron brings up a great point, and with Wimbledon getting broadcast in 3D to the public, there should be some BBC moves in the near future.  Obviously, they plan on working with Cameron on some 3D content, but how far they’re willing to take things may be up in the air for a bit longer.

LG isn’t backing down from all of the other heavyweights and their obsession with active shutter 3D technology.  The electronics giant continues to release passive 3D units that stand up well to the other releases, and the 55-inch Nano Full LED Cinema LW9800 3D HD unit will do plenty to help sway consumers toward the passive take on 3D visuals.  Why do we love this unit so much?  Ah, let us count the ways…

First off, LG has to be thrilled that this is the first passive unit to get THX certified, which means that it passed more than 400 3D visual exams by George Lucas’ entertainment technology conglomerate.  The Nano LED technology really makes the picture pop, so if you’re one of those couch surfers that can’t get enough of incredibly clear TV pictures, then you’ve probably found your dream television.

However, this isn’t what really draws us to the LW9800.  The Smart TV platform that LG is so proud of does everything you could possibly hope for.  You can Skype, utilize online video streaming services, and of course, use all of LG’s fun TV applications.  Passive 3D technology has often been the step-child in the 3D industry, which is why LG couldn’t have timed this any better.  The LW9800 delivers everything you could hope for, but priced at $3,799, it’ll be interesting to see how quickly we see a market-wide adoption.

Sony: The Future of 3D is Bright!

Make no mistake about it, I love optimism, and while there have been several detractors regarding the Nintendo 3DS, I have always wondered why many aren’t realizing what we are actually witnessing:  the first generation 3D gaming device that will undoubtedly lead to massive changes in the industry.  Sony sees what we’re talking about, and Mick Hocking of Sony London Studios obviously has 3D on his mind.  In mentioning the current 3D landscape, he mentions that the future of 3D as a “creative medium” will continue to push what we believe, as gamers, is possible.

I couldn’t agree more, as I’ve told everyone that the 3DS has offered so much beyond the gaming experience of the console itself.  That being said, I love my 3DS and haven’t had any issue with the release.  Sony apparently plans on integrated 3D technology with the Playstation Move, so things like Resistance 3should begin to show us what is in store for 3D gaming.

Properly understanding where we are in 3D technology can help consumers accurately project where things will be in a few years.  Sure, we’re starting to see plenty of glasses-free 3D units, but it will take time to perfect.  After all, flat screens underwent a similar trial by fire.
