“Meat-ing” the Future of 3D Technology?

You’ve seen similar situations with technology, right?  A new use comes out for something that once just delivered entertainment.  Well, naysayers that have been lambasting the development of 3D technology may start eating crow…or at least meat.  Nikko has developed a 3D measuring system for meat which will help suppliers make the most from their cuts.

Whether it be beef, fish, or poultry, four stereoscopic 3D cameras create a 3D image of the piece of meat moving down the conveyor belt.  Once they have captured an accurate three-dimensional shot of the cut, the company can then work on maximizing the usage of that meat.  This is becoming increasingly important when it comes to the rising cost of meat, and pretty much all food, across the globe.

The system is still a little pricey, but they’re working on that.  Once they get over that hurdle, it seems that they’ll have a system that’ll be in huge demand.  While this is designed for meat, aren’t there a million other industries that could benefit?  Let’s get that convo rolling.  What do you think?  Any industries that you can conjure up that could make use of 3D technology?
