You knew it was coming…the writing was on the wall as ESPN began touting their 3D channel, ESPN 3D.  Of course, once they landed the contract to begin broadcasting Monday Night Football, the next step seemed quite logical – begin broadcasting it in 3D.  And…that’s the news we have for you here.  At the 3D Summit, an ESPN VP showed some video of sports fans watching 3D sports in local pubs.  One fan was very enthusiastic:  “My next TV purchase will be a 3D TV!”  Seeing this kind of reaction obviously got ESPN all warm and fuzzy inside, as they look to increase their already dominant market share of the sports reporting world. 

It will take a little while to take hold, as the 3D broadcasts of Monday Night Football won’t begin until 2014, but that can be seen as a positive.  Many are still using 2D televisions, and giving things another couple of years to progress should help the adoption rate.  Further, it will help the technology advance, ensuring that when they do begin these broadcasts, the visuals will be cutting edge. 

We’ve already seen interest in 3D sports in the UK, so this news, while important, probably doesn’t shock anyone.  I, for one, am a huge NFL fan, and think that watching the events in 3D will be killer.  The only question now is whether or not the rest of the NFL fan base will feel the same.  After seeing the reactions presented by ESPN at the 3D Summit, I think this one is a slam dunk…er…touchdown.

With both of these improvements slated to be included in the Phase Two 3D TV releases, the arrival of improved depth on flat screen should induce many younger viewers to jump into the deep end of the 3D TV pool.  After polling the market, the DVB realized that older viewers are completely satisfied with the flat picture, while younger people are left craving better depth perception.  Well, you asked for it, and now you’ve got it!

The big question is, “How will they get the upgrades to fit into the current design?”  Ah, well, we’re glad you asked.  Or, David Wood, chairman of the DVB commercial module is glad you asked…

The plan is to bring the Blu-ray MCV format into the units, but it will require an extra investment on behalf of consumers.  By getting your hands on a compatible TV and break-out box, you will be increasing the overall depth and resolution of your 3D unit.  Another contingency relies on maintaining the HD standard currently involved and sending in a secondary signal that allows for the Full HD effect.  Now, we’re talking!

Sony, the Japanese based electronic giant is boosting up 3D TV technology. It states that its 3D TV sales would account for 40% of its total sales in the year 2012. Digitimes.com claims that the company is expected to ship 2.5 million 3D LCD TVs by March 2011. It also avers that Sony wants to become the leader in 3D television market. 3D TV seems to be a crucial tool for the company to boost its average sales price and to bring profitability.

Harvey Norman, an Australian retailer has said recently that TVs are the most important sellers, but they made little profits in recent times. Aggressive competition prevalent in this arena diminishes price and profit. Sony anticipates increasing 3D TV sales by 10% of its entire LCD TV sales. Nearly, 25 million LCD units have been shipped.

Kenji Sakai, Sony’s (Taiwan) managing director, said to Digitimes.com that the share of shipment is expected to rise to 40% in the next financial year. Kenji is very much interested in making Sony the most prominent seller in the 3D market. Sony is establishing 3D technological hubs to increase the fame of 3D TVs. Kenji also told that it is expected that Sony’s outsourcing orders would 50% of its entire LCD TV sales in the financial year 2010. Sources indicated that the outsourcing share value would touch $15 billion in the financial year 2010. The reputation of 3D TVs is somewhat strange, as the 3D content is not sufficient. The first prototypes announced reveal that the consumers would stay away in group.

Well, all that might just be changed soon by the Italian Broadcasters and Technology Consortium. So what are they trying to achieve? Well, basically they’re combining both the left and right 720p frames into a single 1080p broadcast frame. This is then transmitted in such a way that the 2d televisions only pick up one part of the frame, while the 3d televisions have access to both parts, and will then do their overlaying magic to give you your 3d broadcast.

While this “backward compatible” technology will save a lot of money, it also means that standard HDTVs (not 3D enabled), will only get half the image data streamed, essentially making it half the quality.

The technology is being looked into by the standards commissions, but it might be a while before we see it hit the mainstream.

Most of the television giants are busy giving us the new 3D experience. Korean giant in the consumer electronic LG is also not behind, in fact they are one step ahead. They want to introduce new mobile digital TV with 3D display in 2011. The digital mobile TV will be powered by the LG2161R MDTV chip with the technology known as Non Real Time (NRT). The additional feature LG offers with this 3D TV is that even if you are moving at speed of 200KM/h, the clarity and brightness will remain same for the picture and it will be in 3D. This feature makes them available for the bigger market as people who are commuting everyday can also use it. People who travel daily in the car with high speed can use this feature as well. The mobile TV is going to be introduced in the first week of January and most probably it will be with the pair of 3D glasses along with it.

Again the Korean company LG is in the news for their upcoming release. Instead of disclosing the complete set of plans for the CES 2011, they plan to reveal their secret in stages keeping on hold the consumer’s curiosity. Today they made their first announcement about the latest 3D cinema set. The model is LW6500 that comes with an option of passive 3D glasses which will replace the popular shutter goggles. This has received a couple of industry certifications to make sure that the 3D is flicker-free and fully guaranteed. Apart from these features the new model will assure the user a booster for neat brightness to make sure that third dimension switching does no hinder the brightness of the image or makes the picture look dim. The specifications of this TV are mostly unremarkable. The company is planning to keep your attention glued next week towards the CES and later it would be released in a few markets across the world.

Recently we have heard the news of passive glasses for 3D viewing that will be less expensive compare to the Active shutter glasses, Samsung has come out with the new technology.  They are going to display it in this year’s CES which is based on the Zscreen technology RealD.  RDZ LCD HDTV are compatible with cheaper RealD which can be used while watching movies.  They are going to produce new TV which is going to include active shutter in the display and you can watch this TV without any kind of glasses.

LG and Vizio has already announced their plans of 3D passive glasses.  Now we will have to wait for this new method.  Our eyes are in demand and they are going to tell us now about the comfortable way of watching 3D TV.  Samsung has not yet declared the price of it.  We do not know whether it is more than the current 3D with active shutter glasses so for now we just have to wait for the launch or any official statement from the Samsung House.

Samsung’s new Series 9 3DTV line not only brings 3D to your living room, but does it in a super stylish way. We got a look at the latest pictures of the new series 9, and it is nothing short of stunning. The new line of 3DTVs will feature an asymmetrical design, with the TV converging into the base in the corner. It also has an ultra thin form factor, and is said to be an LED backlit LCD screen. We’re not too sure about the specs of this beauty yet, but from the past, we’ve learnt that even though it is essential, design alone isn’t going to put this 3DTV at the top of the competition. CES saw the announcements of a huge range of 3DTVs for 2011, most of them with a unique and interesting feature set.

Samsung’s own top-of-the-line 3DTV offers quite a lot, and the next generation series 9s have a lot to live up to. But if you’re in for a new Home theater system that looks sleek and sexy in your living room, this has got to be your best bet.
