Vudu bringing 3D Movies to you’re home

So we’ve been giving you the run down on all the new 3DTVs in the market this year, and there’s no doubt, there’s a LOT. So what do you do with them once you’ve picked one up? Well, don’t get too down in the dumps because there’s nothing to watch. We’ve seen a lot of manufacturers building in support for Vudu, the internet movie streaming service.

All you 3DTV owners can now take full advantage of Vudu. They just announced that starting this week, you’ll be able to stream 3D movies directly to your TV through their service. Apparently, the 3D movies will be available in all the usual resolutions that Vudu offers, and they’ll take up the same amount of bandwidth. There’s nothing stating that you need HDMI 1.4a, so movies should be frame compatible 3D. Sources say that the first few titles to make it to your home in 3D will be Meet the Robinsons, Chicken Little and Bolt.

As far as prices are concerned, you’ll be expected to pay an extra dollar for renting 3D movies, and and extra $2 for buying them.

Dolby’s new 3D glasses are a far cry from the cheap setups you usually get in theatres.  Look for them to find their way into your theatre soon

The last time I saw a 3D movie, it was Resident Evil.  I’m not here to get into how the movie was, but the glasses themselves felt like I could’ve bought better glasses at a gas station.  In fact, I’m sure of it.  Now, I get it...you’re “giving” them to the general public (of course we always pay for them somewhere), not to mention that they come in a plastic bag.  However, Dolby has created 3D glasses fit for the technology.

Utilizing 3M’s multilayer optical film lenses, the glasses actually fit your face.  They are anti-glare, anti-scratch, and most importantly anti-goofball.  These things look great, and are designed to replace all old 3D glasses in movie theatres everywhere.

Theatres need to be able to track glasses such as these, which is why Dolby has included individual serial tags that allow for tracking and stock coordination.  Further, priced at $12 a set, it can’t be that much more than what they’re paying for the cheap standard-issue now.

My guess is that they’ll likely continue to carry the old style and sell the upgraded style in the theatre for the user to retain and take home for future use.  Perhaps they’ll allow you to check them out and return after the movie (likely getting your ID or credit card back).  But, regardless of what they intend, one thing is for certain:  they’ll find a way to charge far too much for it!

There is another option, that could be unlikely, but there is logic involved.  Dolby pays any offsetting costs created by the upgraded viewing glasses.  Why?  Well, the answer is simple:  fuelling the market.  If the 3D market tanks due to a lack of technology or consumer interest, Dolby will take a huge loss in their market share of 3D projectors.  In that light, it makes sense.  In other words, it’s all about self-preservation.

3D TV comes in more than a few shapes and sizes these days, but when two of the big dogs get involved in creating more content, it’s bound to make the news.  And…here we are!  Sky and Virgin Media are delivering plenty of 3D content over the course of the remaining year in the UK.  This is great news, as one of the single, largest complaints about the 3D platform is the lack of content.  This should shake things up a bit.

Sky is paying close attention to the content of its 3D TV network, and the announcement that they’ve created “Colossus Productions” should be a shot of excitement to the industry.  It isn’t stopping there, however, as Hollywood has decided that they need to step up their game…as if that hasn’t been decades in the making…but I digress…

Apparently, the movie sector in southern California has been paying attention, as there are several 3D movies in the works that should do plenty to thrill fans of 3D cinema.  And, with all of this excitement going on, nobody’s even mentioned the sequel to Avatar when talking about 3D Hollywood releases…not even in this article…wait…dang it!

The creation of 3D in post-production is likely headed the way of the dinosaur, as theatre-goers have been burned enough times to be skeptical, but with the new resurgence in content that we’re expecting, don’t be surprised it everything gets a mulligan.  Movies like The Hobbit:  An Unexpected Journey 3D should do plenty to create some competition…why?  Because this movie, due out in 2012 will likely blow the doors off of any 3D record that we’ve seen to date.  Another Spider Man installment is due out next year, as well, so look for the 3D cinema to start heating up…right about when the weather does…

3D making you sick? Just blink!

Few days back Samsung published a note warning people for the dangers of 3D movies. In their note they have warned pregnant women, elder people and many other kinds of people should not watch 3D movies for more than specific time. According to them people can become sick. The problem here is they are not explaining what they mean by sick and how it will happen by watching 3D movies. Bill Nye , the famous American scientist and his eye care group explains why some people will be unwell while watching 3D movies.
According to him 30% of the total population is suffering from ‘Marginal Binocular Vision’ which means that your eyes are not working together as they should be and if they are not in total coordination then you will not get proper stereoscopic 3D effect while watching 3D movies.

To save yourself from that problem you need to take out 3D glasses in between or close one eye and then close the second eye for a moment. You can change the angle at what you are watching the movie.

Samsung announces streaming 3D movies on Samsung televisions

Samsung has apparently announced that they will be streaming 3D television via their newly formed Smart Hub “widget”.  The platform can give Samsung a leg up on the rest of the industry.  The European release is creating quite a buzz, and the streaming content is being delivered by PictureBox.  Already streaming content to the UK and Poland, PictureBox is making quite a power move by teaming up with Samsung in this endeavor.

The streaming television will only be available in Europe, but one can only imagine that Samsung has bigger plans when it comes to the American market.  Hulu 3D remains a very distinct possibility and releasing in Europe buys Samsung some time to get the project perfected.

As all concepts of this nature do, a new technology battle will be launched amongst television manufacturers, giving the consumer the options that we all crave.  The ability to watch streaming 3D television will prove too much to pass up, so in order for other companies to compete, they’ll assuredly need to follow suit.  This is the first shot fired in the new 3D arena, so with excitement and vigor, let me be the first to say…”Let the games begin!”

3D BRINGS NEW PREMIUM HIGH IN THE MARKET

3D technology is the new reason to increase the prices of the tickets all over the world.   Today price of the 2D movie is $7.93.  There is almost 44% rise due to 3D movies.
Today more and more theatres are capable of showing 3D movies then before.  Till last year only 1000 screens were there for 3D movies.  This year there are more than 5500.
Singapore has the highest premium, where 3D movie prices are $8.35.  It is more than double.  Japan has the highest 3D price - $`8.9, in Sweden it is $16.43.  Australia has low end premium, In New Zealand it was $13.95 in February which is 25% higher than the tickets of 2D movies.

President of Paramount pictures Intl, Mr. Andrew Cripps says that premiums and hikes in price is not very surprising because U.S. prices are soared 8% during the year.   As per the National Assn. of Theater Owners, for the year 2010, ticket for the first quarter average stands at $7.95 per ticket which started by ‘Avatar’ and ‘Alice in wonderland’ has done remarkably well in overseas markets.  ‘Avatar’ has taken almost $2 billion and ‘Alice’ is also beyond $600 million.  The recent release ‘Clash of the Titans’ has also done around $273.8 out of which $176.1 has come from 3D in spite of some complaint against the conversion process.

There are many more releases in summer for 3D market including ‘Shrek Forever After’, ‘The last Airbender’, Universal’s ‘Despicable Me’ and Disney’s “Toy story 3”.   According to Mr.Cripps, they are giving what consumer is asking for and by paying extra money for the 3D tickets, consumer is accepting it.

Karsten-peter Grummitt, a Dodona Research analyst says that 3D will increase price of the average ticket by 4 to 5 percent in the overall market.  He is assuming 25% to 30% premium for 3D ticket price.  According to him last year the impact was less in a place like U.K. where the average price of the ticket climbed just 5%.

If you compare this with last 5 years where the price has been increased by 3 to 4 percent there are going to be two reasons, one is that there were not enough theatres for 3D viewing and at that time the world was going through recession.  In Australia theater owners have started collecting separate fees for glasses to watch 3D movies.

The boss of Paramount Pictures says that 3D is not useful in the continuous fight of movie industry with online movie pirates. They will continue to share content on peer to peer networks easily.

Huntsberry discussed at the film industry convention about the present state of online piracy. He added that 3D will not provide a simple solution for this, because the pirates can wear the lens to the camera and take out the second layer easily. They will also counterbalance the 3D effects, before sharing the pirated copy in peer to peer networks.

TV and movie industries are very much interested in promoting new 3D technology and content. However, the question is how 3D will manage the continuous fight of movie industry with copyright thefts.

Problem caused by WWW:

Fredrick Huntsberry, the chief operating officer of Paramount Pictures has informed The Hollywood reporter at the CineAsia convention that online pirate is a substantial problem in almost all countries in the world. Anybody having internet connection can access pirated content easily. In the world of internet, everybody is equal.

Importance of consumer awareness:

The Paramount boss thinks that releasing movies online on theatrical dates is not a sufficient solution to the piracy problem.

He stresses that releasing a movie simultaneously will provide a chance to the pirates to steal a very good copy and make it available during the theatrical porthole.

The Paramount boss says that they have made the movie available in theaters only. The studios had taken a decision that they will release movies exclusively to theaters. Then they would make them available online and on DVD. Moving up the online release date into the theatrical window would open up the opportunities to get a high quality copy of the movie much earlier.

So what is the solution? Huntsberry sketched a four-part strategy- fine tuning business models, consumer awareness, legislation to fight online movie piracy and technology.

There is no single solution. We have to overcome online movie piracy by combining all these strategies.

George Lucas’s Plan for dead actors

Mel Smith who is a director of Radioland Murders has claimed that his friend George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars is buying the film rights of the dead actors.  According to him Lucas has plans to resurrect them in his future 3D movies.  He will use computer trickery to bring them together. This means we can see Orson Welles and Barbara Stanwyck alive with today’s living stars.

Above quotes came in the British tabloid ‘The Sun’ but we have already seen 3D work in the movies ‘TRON Legacy’ and ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’.  The amazing technology can go to any extent to show us many amazing things and this news is not surprising.  Currently Hollywood rumor says that this news is actually true and someone is really buying film rights of the dead movie stars.

As per Luke Skywalker, this is not correct news and this should not happen as there can be evil potential for the crime against common sense and this time we cannot forgive George Lucas or at least we should not.
